  • 0.5 pound Elbow macaroni
  • 0.5 cup Butter
  • 0.5 cup All-purpose flour
  • 3 cups Milk whole milk recommended
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon Black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon Dry mustard powder
  • 4 cups Shredded cheddar cheese
  • 2 cups Shredded Gruyere cheese

Preparation Steps

  • Cook macaroni according to package directions. Drain and set aside.
  • In a medium saucepan, melt butter over medium heat. Whisk in flour and cook for 1 minute, stirring constantly.
  • Gradually whisk in milk until smooth. Bring to a simmer, stirring constantly, until sauce thickens. Remove from heat.
  • Stir in salt, pepper, and dry mustard powder.
  • Add shredded cheddar and Gruyere cheeses, stirring until melted and smooth.
  • Pour the cheese sauce over the cooked macaroni in the slow cooker.
  • Stir to combine.
  • Cover and cook on low for 2 hours, or until heated through.
  • Stir before serving.

Notes

For an extra cheesy flavor, you can add a bit of Parmesan cheese along with the cheddar and Gruyere.
